| Hi folks,The Nexus Icon has just started flashing when I start up. Its the Belt symbol,it flashes for 50 seconds, and goes off, this is everytime I start up. The bike has done 15,180 miles, and is due for a service at 16,000 miles. Any advice please. |

Probably means that your belt is due for a change or inspection at the very least.

Belt & rollers check, but not necessarily replacement, at every 7500 miles.
I can tell you how to cancel it (ie stop it flashing) if you want to do that, and have your belt & rollers checked at your next service. |

Hi folks,
I remembered when the brake pads wore out, I took the bike in for an early service. Could be the icon comes up according to the mileage, and not a sensor that says it needs replacing.
I reset the icon and just done 50 miles,it did not come back on,and I am getting 59 MPG, so it might be ok till next service (900 miles time).
Thanks for your help. |

Yes that is exactly it. It comes up every 7500 miles which is the belt and roller check interval as per my post above yours. |

| If it's got a OE belt, it should be good for 12000+ miles, keep a check on the under case hole at the back of the cover, should you see any kevlar strands (hairs) appearing you must change it, or, if the top speed starts reducing per 1000rpms. You can see the belt through this hole, if you stand on your head and shine a maglite in the hole. Belts are now cheaper to buy. |

Thanks Dave,I checked with a torch,no dust or debris, all looks brand new.
I remember when I had the 8000 mile service done, the garage rang me and asked if I wanted the belt changed? as there was nothing wrong with iit.I said if its on the list then change it. |

Can someone with a Nexus run through what the volt meter reads throughout a journey, I was recovered home yesterday (X9) and need some information on charging rates and the regulator workings.
I had not used the bike for a few weeks and was riding around London, stop starting and using the centre stand. The battery could have been nearly flat when I started off and although it is charging (13v+ @ 5000rpm) could not keep up with my use of electricity ie. lights on, brake light, radio, centre stand and slow city running.
Thanks

Dave,
I think the answer is in your question, starting with a low battery and using it fully before it has had time to charge up properly. Generally my Nexus has been charging at between 13.5v and 14v depnding on how well the battery is. As time goes on it drops enough to maitain its correct level of charge.
I rarely 'do' town work, most of my riding are long runs with a minimum of twenty miles. Even a little saunter to Boxhill is a round trip of at least 48 miles.
I hope this helps.

It's the more-than-1-bike syndrome Dave innit?
ie a bike can be 100% reliable when you use it every day but get a new additional toy and lay it up for days/weeks at a time and it starts to complain.
My Nexus whacks out around 14.5v on a run and 13.7v in town. |

Thanks lads, Today I now get 14volts when the bike is running at speed, with the existing battery fully charged, so I can assume it is correct in what your saying, not using the bike, I must remember to keep the battery on charge, The bike does not seem able to recover a nearly flat battery on the bike.
I was first vehicle waiting for the Woolwich ferry, when it would not start.
So I decided not to roll down to the boat, a good decision because I would have been going backwards and forwards on it, I would not have been able to push it up the ramp, and I do not think the ferrymen would have given me a push up the ramp to get off.
I will now see if the battery holds it's charge for a few days.
Hot Tip, charge the battery, if you have not used the bike for a couple of weeks. Even if the bike starts it may continue to discharge and could let you down. 11.8 volts would not operate the relay, the battery has no cranking power, after all it is a 500 single being turned over.
What new bikes still kick starters ? luxury.
Regards
Dave |
